When people think of sports photography, they usually picture someone on the sidelines snapping away with a big camera. And while yes—there’s definitely a big camera involved—there’s so much more that goes into each shot. Before even arriving at the field or court, there’s prep work. Batteries charged. Lenses cleaned. Memory cards cleared (and backups packed, just in case). I research the teams, the key players, and even the layout of the venue so I know the best spots to shoot from. Every detail helps me anticipate that one unforgettable shot.
Timing Is Everything
Sports move fast—really fast. A fraction of a second can mean the difference between a perfect action shot and a blurry mess. That’s why I’m not just watching the play—I’m reading it. I’m watching the athlete’s eyes, their posture, the way the defense shifts. It’s a lot like the game itself: it takes practice, instincts, and a bit of luck. And when everything aligns—the lighting, the angle, the emotion—you get a photo that stops people in their tracks.
